About Poetry and Life, with Sister Claudia Hae-in Lee

Sister Claudia Hae-in Lee was born on June 7, 1945, in Yang-gu in Gang-won province of South Korea. At the outbreak of the Korean War on June 25, 1950, Sister Claudia’s father was abducted to North Korea and the remaining family members fled to Busan, South Korea.

Sister Claudia became a member of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters of Busan in 1964 after graduating from high school. She graduated with a degree in English from the St. Louis University in the Philippines in 1975, and published her first collection of poetry in 1976 titled The Land of Dandelions (민들레의영토).

In 1992, Sister Claudia was appointed as the general secretary of her convent. At the end of her term in 1997, she began doing mission work through the written word through a forum called ‘Hae-in’s Writing Room.’ From 1998 to 2002, Sister Claudia delivered a series of lectures titled ‘Poetry and Spirituality in Life.’ She was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2008, and after receiving treatment, has returned to good health.
